South Africa is a virtual paradise for surfers, with a variety of surf breaks that will blow you away. Rocks, rips, undertow and sharks plague many of the spots and local surfers’ advice can be your best travel guide.
On the West Coast, Cape Death is a spot for only the most experienced and kamikaze surfers. The regular surf has left and right breaks over a shallow reef. It’s a heavy and powerful swell with strong currents, underwater rocks and many sharks.
The Groenrivier Rivermouth has a right and left rivermouth break and is excellent for all surfers. The beach is generally empty and the ride is short but fun with hollow and fast waves. There’s a bit of a rip and a few rocks.
In Cape Town, Bellows is accessed by boat only and is one for the pros and kamikazes only with right and left breaks over rocky reefs. The waves are big, powerful, ledges, the rips and undertows treacherous and is home to a large population of great white sharks.
AECI beachbreak is an exceptional surfing spot for all levels of experience. It has a left and right break over the sandbar; the currents are minimal but beware of sharks. If you get bored, take a boat to the outer reef where it gets big and scary.
